Tour Plan

Arrival to the Portuguese region of Algarve. The closest airport is Faro, but Lisbon is not too far either.

Transfer to the hotel in Portimao. Accommodation. Dinner. Good night.

Driving time: 1 hour

Breakfast. Our first hiking trip through the picturesque Algarve region will have over 100 m high cliffs that reveal the geological past of the landscape.

Our paths led our predecessors to distant fertile fields where corn, beans, potatoes, tomatoes, chickpeas, and others were grown.

We will end the journey in the idyllic settlement of Carrapateira. Dinner. Overnight stay.

Breakfast. We will go along the Fishing Route, which winds along the Atlantic coast of Portugal.

Along the way, we will witness interesting rock formations on the Amado, Murração, and Manteiga beaches. Via Barranco da Pena Furada, we will climb to the plateau near the village of Vila do Bispo. Dinner. Overnight stay.

Breakfast. We continue hiking along the Fishermen's path towards the extreme southwest of the European continent.

We will finish at the imposing cape of Cabo de São Vicente, which was once considered the end of the world: Finis Terrae. The most interesting beach along the way will be Telheiro Beach. Dinner. Overnight stay.

Ascent: 115 m

Descent: 180 m

Breakfast. We continue the hiking part of the Trilho dos Pescadores trail. From "holy" Sagres, we will go along the coast to Salema.

We will walk over the cliffs down to the coast and beaches, and back to the cliffs. Interesting bays along the way are Martinhal, Barranco, Ingrina, Zavial, Furnas, Figueira, and finally Salema. Dinner. Overnight stay.

Hiking duration: 6-7 hours / Distance: 20 km

Ascent: 350 m

Descent: 380 m

Breakfast. Picturesque trekking along the beaches between Luz and Lagos.

The highlight of the day is the rock formations of Ponta da Piedade. There will be no shortage of extremely interesting beaches and bays.

Free time with Lagos, from where the Portuguese conquered the world. Dinner. Overnight stay.

Breakfast. A day off to independently explore the south of Portugal or some other optional trip through a local agency or enjoy the beach, cuisine, and hedonism.

Breakfast. Transfer to Faro (or Lisbon) Airport. We wish you a safe travel back home.

Trip Information

Accommodation
During the trekking along Fisherman’s trail in Portugal, you are accommodated in a 3*** star hotel in Portimao city in the Algarve in double or twin rooms.

A single-room supplement is not obligatory unless you want a room for yourself; otherwise, we find you a same-sex roommate. Triple rooms are possible to arrange on request. We stay the whole duration of the tour in the same hotel, so you can skip a day if you want.

Transportation
Our Izimanija team member or driver will wait for you outside Faro International Airport (or Lisbon Airport on request) and take you to the accommodation in Portimao City. All land transports within the program are already included in the price. For smaller groups, we use taxis/cars/vans and for bigger groups minibuses/buses, private.

Food and drinks
Our hotel serves delicious food. Both breakfast and dinner are served on a buffet, to be sure you get enough energy for everyday walking.

For hikes by day, you can buy some things you like at the nearby supermarket or enjoy snacks in local cafes where available.

Health and Safety
You need to have your health insurance that covers trekking with you.
Some sections are far from the closest roads, so eventual rescuing is not an easy job. Please consult with your doctor before coming.

Portugal is generally a safe country and local people we work with are very trustworthy.

Tips and money
The official currency in Portugal is the euro EUR
. Payments by credit cards are mostly accepted, but there are some places where they accept cash only.

For an appreciation of the staff, you can always tip them.

Equipment and luggage
We send you the equipment list once you apply for the tour. Usual hiking gear is required for safe walking along the Portuguese coast.

As we stay at the same hotel the entire week, you only take a daily pack with you on the day trip.


Payment and Cancellation Policy

650 €/ person at the time of booking; the rest must be paid by 30 days before the tour starts

For cancellations more than 30 days before arrival, we keep 600 € per person; for cancellations 29-15 days before arrival we keep 900 € per person; for later cancellations or no-show we keep the full amount.

How difficult is Fishermen’s’ trail?

Fishermen’s’ trail is probably one of the nicest coastal hikes worldwide, where you do not need to gain much elevation daily.

Usually, there is only 100-350 m elevation gain and descent. But – the stages are usually 15-20 km long, so be sure you come to Portugal fit.

How does the environment on Fishermens' Trail look like?

The landscape on Fishermen’s Trail is astonishing and breathtaking.

All those cliffs, hidden beaches, waves, local cafes, and people make the destination incredible. The trails lead mostly near the coast, but also a bit further into the mainland to calm villages.

What to pack?

The equipment list we send to you once you sign in for the tour. Hiking boots and sun protection are definitely must-haves.

Can I rent the equipment in Algarve?

Hiking culture in the Algarve is not so developed yet, so there are no places to rent walking poles or hiking boots or similar.

You should bring all the necessary equipment with you from your home country.

How to prepare for trekking on Fishermen’s’ trail?

If you are a sporty person there should not be a problem. You should run, cycle, or do other cardio sports.

Walking experiences are very helpful. We recommend you do some similar hikes (cca 20 km daily) beforehand. After all, you need to be relaxed, fit, motivated and goal-oriented.
