Touch down at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and begin your adventure!
A scenic 1-hour drive takes you to the vibrant town of Moshi, nestled at an altitude of 890 m, your gateway to unforgettable experiences.
Driving time: 1 hour
After breakfast, depart Moshi for the southeast entrance of Kilimanjaro National Park—Marangu Gate (1843 m).
Upon arrival, complete check-in and registration, marking the beginning of your Kilimanjaro ascent. Traverse through lush woods and the enchanting rainforest, where towering eucalyptus trees and diverse bird species await. Keep watch for the elusive Colobus monkeys with their distinctive black or white fur!
Your journey culminates at the Mandara Huts (2700 m), where you'll rest and recharge.
Be prepared with suitable gear and footwear for the muddy terrain often found at these lower altitudes.
Driving time: 1 hour
Hiking duration: 5 - 7 hours / Distance: 12 km
Ascent: 857 m
Your journey unveils the transition from woodlands to expansive moorlands, offering a mesmerizing panorama of Mawenzi's rugged peaks reaching skyward.
At these heights, altitude sickness can arise, so stay mindful of your well-being and promptly communicate any signs of discomfort to your guide.
Arriving at the Horombo Huts, situated at 3720 m, take a moment to unpack and soak in the awe-inspiring vista of Kibo before dinner.
Hiking duration: 4 - 5 hours / Distance: 8 km
Ascent: 1020 m
An additional day at the Horombo Huts ensures your body adjusts to the escalating altitude. Rest at camp if you experience any signs of illness or fatigue.
Yet, if acclimatization progresses smoothly, venture towards the Mawenzi Hut for a breathtaking vista of Kibo and Mawenzi. Opt for a leisurely walk, relishing the stunning landscape, or embark on a fascinating journey to the remarkable Zebra Rocks.
Hiking duration: 1 - 2 hours / Distance: 3 km
Ascent: 300 m
Descent: 300 m
Beginning across the heath, watch as it transforms into the arid, vast highlands between Mawenzi and Kibo.
Here, scattered volcanic rocks bear witness to the region's volcanic history. The ascent towards Kibo Huts (4703 m) is rigorous and steep, demanding physical endurance. Upon reaching Kibo Huts, prepare your gear and cold-weather clothing for tomorrow's climb. Keep water insulated in a thermos to prevent freezing.
Early bedtime is crucial for the energy needed for the ultimate challenge: Kilimanjaro's summit!
Hiking duration: 7 hours / Distance: 10 km
Ascent: 98 m
As dawn approaches, a light meal precedes the nocturnal hike starting around midnight.
Negotiating the challenging terrain scattered with loose rocks is often considered the climb's toughest segment. The aim: reach Gilman’s Point by sunrise to set sights on Uhuru, Kibo's pinnacle. Pause briefly at Gilman’s Point for a breathtaking panorama before proceeding along the crater's edge towards Uhuru, marking the final ascent with a steady incline.
Depending on the timing, snow might greet you on the path toward Uhuru Peak – Kilimanjaro's zenith at 5895 m. Celebrate this monumental achievement with a photo at the Uhuru Peak Sign amidst the astounding views.
Returning to Kibo Huts swiftly follows, allowing for a well-deserved lunch break before continuing to the Horombo Huts, where a restful night's sleep awaits.
Hiking duration: 12 - 15 hours / Distance: 22 km
Ascent: 1192 m
Descent: 2175 m
